چکیده

Problems emerging from previous analyses of epenthesis in Japanese verbal endings are discussed and a crucial relationship between epenthesis and assimilation is argued. The focus is on the occurrence of /i/-epenthesis with certain root-final consonants. The analysis, which incorporates the view that assimilation is accomplished by means of autosegmental spreading, illustrate* that epenthesis cannot split clusters that have undergone assimilation. Assimilation and epenthesis are seen as complementary, with epenthesis occurring where assimilation has not. Similarity and phonotactics in Arabic

The statistical patterns of language are systematic linguistic data which must be accounted for in linguistic theory. The phonotactics of the Arabic verbal roots are presented as a case study. In Arabic, the acceptability of a verbal root is gradiently dependent on the similarity of homorganic consonant pairs within the root. We propose the stochastic constraint model of phonological patterning...

7 Tone : Is it Different ?

Except for a brief period in the late 1970s and early 1980s, tone has generally fallen outside the central concerns of theoretical phonology. During that period, the concepts and formalisms of Goldsmith’s (1976a, b) autosegmental approach to tone provided the model to address other aspects of non-linear phonology including vowel harmony (Clements 1976, 1981), nasal harmony (Hyman 1982), and fea...

A Computational Treatment of V-V Compounds in Japanese

We examine how a large-scale computational grammar can account for the complex nature of Japanese verbal compounds. Previous computational Japanese grammars have tried to avoid the problem by simple solutions such as enumerating as many verbal compounds in the lexicon as possible. In contrast, we develop the analysis that is linguistically adequate and computationally tractable and thus meets t...

Here only the ...

On Hungarian Morphology

The aim of this study is to provide an autosegmental description of Hungarian morphology. Chapter 1 sketches the (meta)theoretical background and summarizes the main argument. In Chapter 2 phonological prerequisites to morphological analysis are discussed. Special attention is paid to Hungarian vowel harmony. In Chapter 3 a universal theory of lexical categories is proposed, and the category sy...
